Learning About The Most Common Golden Retriever Problems

by Carol Matthews

Golden Retrievers are really wonderful dogs. They are friendly, loyal, affectionate, and they are even great with children. Unlike many other breeds they do not have a lot of problems, but there are still a few Golden Retriever problems that may develop. Separation anxiety is a common problem among this breed, as they are very caring dogs and grow close to their owners. Then when their owners leave them at home alone they tend to become very sad and disappointed and may lash out to express how they are feeling.

Golden Retrievers do require vigorous exercise requirements, regular brushing and combing, and are easy to develop separation anxiety as well as a variety of other health problems. A few of the most common health problems that this breed suffers from includes hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, hereditary heart disease, cancer, arthritis, allergies, and bloat. Although Golden Retrievers are generally a healthy breed do not be surprised if your dog develops one of these problems. Some even go unnoticeable for an extended period of time and this is why it is important that you keep a watchful eye on your dog and his behavior.

Elbow dysplasia is one of the most common Golden Retriever problems and is considered to possibly be due to different growth rates of the three bones that make up the elbow. Although the symptoms of this problem can develop in your dog at any age, it typically shows up in the earlier years. Common suggestions for treatment include prescription medication and weight control.

Unlike hereditary cataracts, this problem can become quite serious and may even result in blindness if left unnoticed or untreated. Von Willebrand's disease is also a very common problem with Golden Retrievers, and the main symptoms of this condition include excessive bleeding and swelling.

This is a progressive deterioration of the light receptive area in the eye and if left unnoticed or untreated it can actually result in blindness. If you ever notice any signs or symptoms of any of these Golden Retriever problems in your dog you should get them in to the veterinarian as soon as possible.

It is imperative that all owners become more educated on the subject of Golden Retriever problems and about the different treatment methods that are available and which will be helpful here. You know your dog better than anyone else and so it is up to you to notice any changes in your dog both subtle and dramatic. As soon as you think that anything is wrong you should get the dog in to see your veterinarian so that they can make a proper assessment and enforce the necessary treatment.

In order to guard them against as many health problems as possible, it is important that you provide them with the nutrition that they need, and make sure that they are getting lots of exercise. Getting your dog outside for walks is going to do them a world of good, as will socializing them with other people and other animals.

You love your dog and of course you want them to live the best life possible, and this means taking care of them and their health.
